KOALA:

The koala is one of the most admired marsupial mammals. Their cute cuddly appearance appeals to people of all ages. Koalas grow to about 21 to 33 inches long and are virtually tail less. Their diet consists of a certain type of eucalyptus leaf. One of the most unusual characteristics of the koala is that it seldom drinks. The name koala is thought to mean "no drink" in several aboriginal tongues. Their limited diet encourages a sluggish digestive system. If those with this totem consume a large variety of foods digestive problems could occur. Basic food groups are recommended with an emphasis on herbs and herbal remedies.

Koalas are solitary animals. They are independent and a bit indifferent to family members. At birth a young koala is about the size of a bee. The mother will raise her young attentively until it is strong enough to be on its own. Once this happens the emotional bond between the mother and her offspring is broken. Individuals with koala medicine often require periods of isolation and an environment with little noise. Emotional expression is difficult which can make intimate relationships challenging. The koala teaches us how to be comfortable with our own company. Those with this totem make excellent priests and nuns.

The koalas eyesight is poor although their cup like ears can hear acutely. They also have a highly developed sense of smell. Koala medicine people have strong psychic and clairaudient abilities. Sound that soothes the senses and aromatherapy benefit them.

Although they appear to be passive with a nonchalant attitude, koalas are very territorial. They demand their personal space and accommodate one another accordingly. They sleep as long as 18 hours a day and are most active at night. Koala medicine people do their best work in the late evening and early morning hours.

Perched high in a tree the koalas grip is secure. As they move from limb to limb their footing is solid. When the koala appears in our life its reminding us to stand solid within ourselves and not be influenced by situations or events.

Seldom distracted and always focused, the koala is a master in the art of deep relaxation and concentration. They hold the teachings of stress free movement and can show us how to create and maintain sacred space in our lives.

Koala Animal Totem:

Koala is a marsupial and those animals teach us the importance of bringing ideas and plans to early fruition and then nursed along through experience. Eucalyptus is also important to study and used as a healing oil or fragrance. Its aroma helps with the lungs, kidneys, liver and nasal passages. It helps dispel toxins and is very calming. Koala can teach you how to keep you emotions under control. Be careful of becoming too sensitive or too emotions in stressful situations. Relax and climb above the problems to see them from a different perspective. If a Koala appears to you in person or in a dream state, it is a message that you have been carrying an emotional burden which you need to let go of. Remember you are stronger than you imagine and you will be able to hang on through adverse times. Koala people need to have a safe home where they can be safe, protected, and that is not stressful. Koala people are very comfortable by themselves. They are also empathetic and in tune with the emotions of others. Because of this, they need time alone to detox and regroup.

Koala's Message and Medicine

Climb over Obstacles / The Value of Slow Movement / Ability to Hold On

The koala sometimes called the Koala bear resembles a bear, but it is not related to the bear family. Koala’s are found only in the eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia. This animal has a large, round head with large, round, furry ears, and a large protuberant, curved black nose. The koala has a short, stout, body that is gray in color. Its feet are large and its legs are short and stocky. The koala makes his home high in eucalyptus trees and feeds on the leaves and shoots of a particular species of eucalyptus.. Many people believe that this cute, fuzzy, animal is lazy but this is not so. The koala is a slow-moving marsupial mammal and it is nocturnal. It’s hands and feet are specially adapted for climbing tree’s. The koala sleeps in the eucalyptus tree in the daytime, firmly grasping the limbs with their feet, clinging on with five sharply clawed toes on each foot.

This animal is not comfortable on the ground but it can shuffle along on its short legs if it has too. A single baby is born after a 35 day gestation period. It is blind, hairless, and is only ¾ inch long. Instinct leads it to its mothers pouch where it feeds and remains until it is six months old. The koala is a protected species but it is still threatened by the loss of habitat due to man and seasonal brush fires. Koala’s message is the ability to climb over obstacles and hold on to what brings you security which should be a positive belief system. Take it easy and slow down. Maintain your diet and don’t substitute a food that you are unfamiliar with if you have a health condition. Spend some time in solitude and take a class in Yoga. Rise above your problems by viewing them from a different perspective. You make a difference in the lives of others even if you are not always a party girl or guy.

I could use some koala energy right now. I thought about restarting a yoga program last night, and then didn't. Not motivated after I got out of my nice warm bath... Ha ha! Maybe tonight, if I don't put it off too late.

Hi Laurel!

Well, Koala is pretty laid back about the whens, and recognizing the value of slowness and taking your time, so sounds to me like you've got a good connection going on already with Koala. Enjoy the ride. :-) Ter

Yes - there is much here that I identify with. ;-)
