Working With The Animal Totems

Shadow Totems come momentarily into our journeys to strengthen and teach us by bringing to us our fears; that we many face them for them to become instead, our strength.

Shadow Totem haunting me
With my deepest fears
I know you come to teach me
To bring me through the fiery trials
And finally
To stand with me in the Light
Your strength
Challenges my weakness
Shows me how to gain courage
Proves my Soul Truth
Reveals my inner Being
That I have feared to face
Brings me to the reality
Of all I am here to be
When I release myself to Knowing
There is nothing left to fear
In that glorious moment
Of self revelation
I Evolve, Be, Am complete
And you
Change from apparent foe
To mentor
Empowering me
With all that I in fear, battled
And as the victor find
Foe is friend
The feared is now power
And you
At first a dark shadow
Of my inner fears
Are now the Light of my Truth
A lifelong totem energy
Of Wisdom Protection Power
Once Shadow Totem
Welcome
You are now
My Spirit Totem
Thank you

I have had an abnormal aversion to Barn Owls for as long as I can remember. Though I love owls, this species in particular gives me chills when I see its face, and I actually have come to the point of going out of my way to avoid images of these owls out of fear, especially at night. Visual depictions of the Barn Owl in my mind are associated in the way an evil entity embodies an icon, and I always hated seeing it around. In my extensive study of totems I came across the idea of a Shadow Totem, and further looked into the teachings of the Barn Owl to make any sort of personality correlations.

I learned that some of its attributes included asymmetry and discord; In my more recent years of young adulthood, I've experienced especially among social groups of varying ratios of boys and girls or age differences what makes me act differently among different people. Around guys, I am much more comfortable socially, but with girls, I am more stiff and feel alternative. With younger people than myself, I often feel more cynical, but with older people, I feel more loose and cool and easier to communicate. Social discord was something that I became anxious about after a while, and I suppose that this property along with perhaps others may correlate to my fear of Barn Owls.

Another attribute was silence and solitary personality, which given that my life totem is a Lynx, I worry about coming off as aloof due to my introversion. Not sure what it may be teaching me there.

Barn Owls also associate with the night and dreams, when Barn Owls can most haunt me in consciousness.

Barn Owls actually do have quite a few of the same attributes as does the Lynx, which I don't know how to feel about.

I don't know if this applies, but I know someone who is quiet my oppiset and it reminds me of everything I don't want to be. It reminds me of all the negative energy they have and carry with them everytime they are around me. It awakens me to realize that I must stay on my toes so I don't become the reflection of them. Sad, Lonely, bitter, gosip like, lying and in the defence and in denial of there own problems to the point, instead of seeking help, they seek what they can gain from others without contribution. This is my shadow totem for now. Untill I find animals that are relavant to this person, this individual will represent it's self. What characteristics of animal relates to this person?
