By: Tacanupa Yuwakanpi Wicasa, They Came and Blessed His Pipe Man

"To all the people of the earth, the Creator has planted a Sacred Tree under which they may gather, and there find healing, power, wisdom and security. The roots of this tree spread deep into the body of Mother Earth. Its branches reach upward like hands praying to Father Sky. The fruits of this tree are the good things the Creator has given to the people: teachings that show the path of love, compassion, generosity, patience, wisdom, justice, courage, respect, humility and many other wonderful gifts.

The Ancient Ones taught us that the life of the Tree is the life of the people. If the people wander far away from the protective shadow of the Tree, if they forget to seek the nourishment of its fruits, or if they should turn against the Tree and attempt to destroy it, great sorrow will fall upon the people. Many will become sick at Heart. The people will lose their power. They will cease to dream dreams and see visions. They will begin to quarrel amongst themselves over worthless trifles. They will become unable to tell the truth and to deal with each other honestly. They will forget how to survive in their own land. Their lives will become filled with anger and gloom. Little by little they will poison themselves and all that they touch.

It was foretold that these things would come to pass, but that the Tree would never die. And as long as the Tree lives, the people live. It was also foretold that the day would come when the people would awaken, as if from a long, drugged sleep; that they would begin, timidly at first but then with great urgency, to search again for the Sacred Tree.

The knowledge of its whereabouts, and of the fruits that adorn its branches have always been carefully guarded and preserved within the minds and hearts of our wise elders and leaders. These humble, loving and dedicated souls will guide anyone who is honestly and sincerely seeking along the path leading to the protecting shadow of the Sacred Tree."

Personal Note:

Creator gave the fruits and gifts to all of us. They are instilled within each of us. This is why we must realize what powers we have. This is what we are teaching in all of our statements in simple ways. This is the purpose of our Seven Sacred Rites: Vision Quest, Sweatlodge, Making of Relatives, Sun Dance, Becoming of a Woman, Throwing of the Ball and the Keeping of the Soul. It is the Seventh Direction. This is the Earth Star Way for Star Nations. In Love & Light."

Great Spirit, Mountain Ancestors, All My Relations, Blessings be here today as I come before you Honored One.

You have seen many sunrises and sunsets upon your branches, Your sacred roots have been quenched by life giving rains.

Honored Tree Spirit, I give thanks to you,
...for the singing birds that you shelter
...for the music you sing in the breeze
...for listening to the voices of the creatures
...for echoing the ancestors strength

Respected One, I ask your permission and humbly request your presence for my guided purpose as Great Spirit directs.

All things belong to you, Creator, all things are sacred.
So this day I honor you Tree Spirit and humbly Thank You

LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART

Art by Moki

I go among trees and sit still.
All my stirring becomes quiet
around me like circles on water.
My tasks lie in their places
where I left them, asleep like cattle.

Then what is afraid of me comes
and lives a while in my sight.
What it fears in me leaves me,
and the fear of me leaves it.
It sings, and I hear its song.

Then what I am afraid of comes.
I live for a while in its sight.
What I fear in it leaves it,
and the fear of it leaves me.
It sings, and I hear its song.

After days of labor,
mute in my consternations,
I hear my song at last,
and I sing it. As we sing,
the day turns, the trees move.

Sharonlee, thank you so much for this beautiful poem. I had not heard the word "Dryads" before and so had to look it up to make sure I was understanding it's usage correctly in your poem. Such a beautiful expression of your intimate connection with nature, and your essential attunement to the devic kingdoms ... it has warmed my heart and soul, and taught me something *new* in the process. ~http://www.theoi.com/Nymphe/Dryades.html

Dancing with Dryads

on the edge of the forest

where the shadows are soft

there is a winding path

bordered by moss…

the earthy scent of mushrooms

and rich organic matter

rose around my feet

as I followed the winding way

that led into the deeper forest

where dryad like to play…

I knew just where to find them

I’d been this way before

both by moon-light & by sun

this call I could not ignore…

for the dryads only call to me

when there is something to be seen…

Artemis, friend to dryad nymphs

was nowhere to be found

and from deep in the forest

I heard feet beating on the ground

womanly spirits of nature

presided over the forests and groves

each born with a tree to watch as its own…

and so connected with their life-tree

should the tree perish

then dryad dies with it

such is unity of tree & dryad spirit…

If this is caused by a mortal

the gods will punish him for that deed

the dryads themselves

will punish any thoughtless mortal breed

who would somehow injure

or threaten the safety of their trees…

but this sweet & fragrant twilight

all seemed very calm

I could sense no one nearby

who would wish to do them harm…

and yet… and the beating grew ever loud

joined now by a rhythmic tune

that conjured images of nature

morning sun and winter moon…

come quickly quickly quickly

the dryads called to me

you’ll miss it miss it miss it

- the birth of dryad & new tree!

my feet hurried faster

I ran to the beat of their tune

until, panting & barely breathing

I burst into a clearing

lit by star & evening moon…

… oh! just slowly unfolding

a new tree’s first shiny leaf

with a tiny baby dryad

curled up safe beneath…

my heart wept tears of joy

that nourished the new sprung tree

and smiling

the baby dryad looked wisely up at me…

she knows you are our closest friend

our protector

and our guardian

the older dryads whispered

as I knelt upon the forest earth

… and the only living sole

to have seen a dryad birth…
