Chipmunk's Wisdom Includes:

  • Gathering

  • Ability to see both light and shadow
  • Mobility
  • Cuteness

These chatterboxes have about thirty vocabulary combinations! Chipmunks sleep through the winter, but not as deeply as frogs, toads, snails or earthworms. A chipmunk rushes and scampers around finding nuts, acrons, and other seeds through the spring, summer and fall. He eats as much as he can. He then stores away a supply of food for the winter in a round hole under the ground. When winter arrives, the fat little chipmunk curls up into a furry ball and goes to sleep. Once in a while this light-sleeper wakes up and nibbles at a pile of nearby food. They have a thin, fury tail. Its nickname is a chippie! They have four very sharp front teeth which serve them as built in nutcrackers. Chipmunks love berries and other fruits. His bed is mad of dry leaves. On each side of his mouth is a special pouch. When he finds food, he puts equal amounts in each side of his mouth. He stores about four nuts in each pouch. Chipmunks are very friendly fellows. Their life span is usually seven years. The chipmunk wears black and white stripes down his little brown jacket. A chipmunk is a lot of nutty fun to watch.

Medicine:

Chipmunk medicine teaches to be observant and to explore our surroundings. They teach us to take a new route, and to not always walk, run, or drive the same old way. They remind us to become more curious about our Earth Mother. They tell us to learn to trust ourselves more. The chipmunk teaches to alternate our routines and to balance our diet carefully. They teach us to tell others about our discoveries. The chipmunk says to consider speaking in public or give seminars. First you were the student, but now it is your time to be the teacher. Talk about your interests with others. Study the facts, try different approaches, and then just be your adorable self. Don't be ashamed to accept a handout either. However, don't be too gullible, about information someone maybe trying to feed you. Chipmunk medicine tells us to sound proof our environment as much as possible to allow us a solid, sound, and good night's sleep.

Chipmunk shows up as a spirit guide when ...

You need to be a good hunter to gather food for your children.
You need to be able to regulate the usage of your resources.
You need to have savings for the future.
You need to be mobile.
You need to see both negative and positive side of an issue.

The Chipmunk

Chipmunk, like squirrel, embodies the quality of trust. They have little fear of people and are often found in rural areas, city parks and in the wild. Chipmunks are very curious and take the time to explore everything that comes across their path. They are inquisitive, fearless and playful. They do what they want to do in their own time frame. They are quite vocal often drawing attention to themselves. Chipmunk medicine people will not tolerate being told what to do or when to do it. They make good leaders and spokespersons.

When a chipmunk is twelve weeks old they have the ability to be on their own. The symbolism of the number twelve or the combined numbers of one and two should be studied by those with this totem. Cycles occur regularly in a persons life and those with chipmunk medicine will often find that changes will occur in their life approximately every twelve weeks or twelve months. Knowing this gives you forewarning and the opportunity for preparedness.

By watching the chipmunks behavior much can be learned. They appear to scamper to and fro always in a hurry to get somewhere. Starting in one direction, circling around and arriving back where they started from. There is no detail that goes unnoticed by the chipmunk as they circle around and see beyond the obvious. Chipmunk teaches the art of observation and appropriate movement.

Chipmunks have an air of independence and certainty about them. Their inquisitive nature leads them into unexplored territory and their detailed mind leaves no stone unturned. If chipmunk is your totem pay attention to how your energy is being used. Are you thoughts constructive or destructive? Are your fears keeping you from playing and enjoying life? Are you in charge of your life or have you given you authority over to another?

Chipmunk is the messenger of many realms. If this is your totem you are on your way to self discovery.
